Little Big Horn Scenario
This scenario begins when Custer separates from Reno to launch his ill-fated attack on the
Sioux villages along the Little Big Horn. Benteen's companies, with the pack train, arrive
as reinforcements after their reconaissance South of the Little Big Horn. The Sioux are
slow to react at first, but will Custer's troopers survive the onslaught of over 1000
warriors?
Revised 10/13/96.
Armaments of the various Indian contingents have been changed to more accurately reflect the
historical situation (in the original version they have far too many repeaters). The ratios
of various firearms are based on information from the Osprey Campaign Series title Little
Big Horn 1876, by Peter Panzeri. He estimates that the Indians had approximately 200
repeating rifles/carbines, and at least twice as many other firearms (represented here as
either SS LA Carbines or SS Carbines). The number of warriors in the scenario, 1600,
represents what I believe to be a fair compromise between various estimates of the number of
warriors present at the Little Big Horn.
Variant: Custer's Gatlings
This variant allows players to gauge what effect the three gatling guns of Terry's column
may have had during the battle of the Little Big Horn. Although it is highly unlikely that
these guns could have kept pace with Custer's column, they are included here with the slower
moving pack train.
